2023年2月6日清晨5時，天未破曉之際，佛光山總本山千名僧信二眾長跪於大雄寶殿內，聆聽宗長心保和尚沉痛宣布：佛光山開山星雲大師化世圓滿，於2月5日下午5時，於莊嚴念佛聲中，圓寂於佛光山傳燈樓開山寮，享耆壽97歲。面對如此佛教一代大師人天眼滅，般若舟沉，大眾痛失依怙，同聲祈願大師能乘願再來。
星雲大師一生弘揚人間佛教、建設佛光淨土，開山56年來，於全球創建300餘所寺院、台美澳菲等地創辦5所大學、佛光會員數百萬人，利益無數人。他一生寫照，誠如他自撰之詩偈：
「心懷度眾慈悲願，
身似法海不繫舟；
問我一生何所求，
平安幸福照五洲。」
The Passing Away of Fo Guang Shan Founder – Venerable Master Hsing Yun at Age 97
On the morning of February 6th, 2023, at 5 AM, as dawn broke, a thousand monastic and lay members of the Fo Guang Shan Order knelt in the Main Shrine Courtyard of Fo Guang Shan Monastery, listening to the solemn announcement made by Most Ven. Hsin Bau, Chairperson of the Fo Guang Shan Board of Directors. Ven. Master Hsing Yun, the founder of the Fo Guang Shan Order, passed away at age 97, on February 5th, 2023 at 5 PM, amidst the solemn chanting of the Buddha’s name in the Founders Quarters at the Fo Guang Shan Light Transmission Building.
Venerable Master Hsing Yun’s life is epitomized in the following verse:
With a heart filled with compassion and vows to save others,
My body is like the ocean of the dharma, unbound;
Should you ask what have I achieved in this lifetime?
Peace and happiness now shine over the five continents.
【記者羅智華、曹麗蕙大樹報導】在「南無本師釋迦牟尼佛」聖號繚繞佛光山總本山的梵音中，佛光山住持心保和尚於2月6日清晨5時，在大雄寶殿集結全山僧信，難掩悲痛宣布：「師父上人已經化世圓滿，安詳圓寂。」
心保和尚一度哽咽表示，星雲大師一生弘揚人間佛教，「我們做弟子的要秉承師志，不忘初心，弘法利生，以人間佛教為宗風，繼續弘揚正法」。
心保和尚開示，大師常勉勵徒眾要「為教增光，為己增榮」，因此弟子們應彼此共勉，「除了感謝大師恩德，更要以弘法利生為家業、為事業，才不會辜負師父對我們的期望。」
